Mandy Kennedy Counselling is live at mandykennedycounselling.uk. Mandy is a BACP accredited counsellor working from Culmstock, near Wellington, Tiverton and Cullompton, and she has been practising for over thirty years. She has also been a CREATE client for a long time, which meant this project came with a rare luxury: we already knew exactly what she needed, and just as importantly, what she didn't.
What she didn't need was another WordPress site.
The Problem With The Old Site
The previous site ran on WordPress with a commercial theme, which is a perfectly normal setup and one that millions of small business sites use without issue. It worked. But it came bundled with the usual list of things nobody asks for when they just want a website: a theme licence to renew every year, a stack of plugins that need patching before they become a security risk, and a page builder sitting between Mandy and her own words.
None of that is unusual. It is simply the tax you pay for using a system built to do everything for everyone. For a single practitioner with seven pages of content, it is overhead with no upside.
Seven Pages, Built By Hand
The new site is seven hand-written pages. No theme, no page builder, no CMS licence, nothing sitting in the background waiting to be updated or to break. It is about as close to the metal as a modern website gets.
That matters for a reason beyond tidiness. A hand-coded site with no bloated framework loads fast, and speed is not a vanity metric here. Someone searching for a counsellor is usually doing it on their phone, often in a private moment, and they are not going to wait around for a page builder's worth of scripts to load before they can read a phone number. A slow site at that exact moment is a lost enquiry, and in this line of work, a lost enquiry can matter more than most.
Why We Left The Copy Alone
The easiest mistake to make on a project like this is to treat a rebuild as an excuse to rewrite everything, tightening sentences, adding calls to action, sprinkling in the kind of language that turns up in every counselling website template going. We didn't do that.
Mandy has spent thirty years learning how to talk about difficult things carefully. That skill doesn't sit in a marketing brief and it isn't something a copywriter improves by editing for SEO keywords. So we kept her existing copy word for word. The only thing that changed is what it sits on top of.
This is a decision we'd defend on most client sites where the person has genuine expertise in how they communicate with their own audience: doctors, therapists, solicitors, anyone whose words carry professional weight. Our job was to get out of the way, not get in the middle.
What Changes When You Remove The Overhead
Dropping WordPress in favour of hand-written pages isn't the right call for every client. Sites that need frequent content updates, multiple authors, or e-commerce functionality generally benefit from a CMS, and we build plenty of those. But for a small, stable site where the content rarely changes and speed and reliability matter more than flexibility, stripping out the extra layers is often the better long-term decision.```
There's no annual licence fee ticking away. No plugin update that might quietly break a page nobody's looked at in months. No page builder holding the content hostage if the theme goes out of support. Same words, same address, considerably less to go wrong.
